Camelot 1.07
Nov. 29th, 2011 12:56 amIn which we open with a gratutious shot of Morgana bathing. The sequence is of course drawn out for the sake of being drawn out, and then the show wants to pull its fake! feminist card and say "the soldier who was watching her shouldn't have been doing that." Except this show has made it a point to reveal that we're all peeping toms, characters and viewers alike. Characters because they like to use each other to get ahead, or lust when a king should be ruling; viewers because the editors thought we've never been exposed to sex! or nudity! on a show before (cause obviously if we've never seen in medieval fantasy times, we've never seen it before....)
Inaccurate costume alert!!!! Did Eva Green go from a red carpet directly to work one day? I'm not expecting accuracy for a fantasy show that already takes tons of liberties, but that gown is just....glaringly unfit to be on this show. And the fur cape only makes it stick out more not less. She looks she's attending Carine Roitfeld's Irreverent vampire ball. (Give yourself a high five if you know who Carine Roitfeld is.) HOWEVER, the necklace Morgana is wearing does pick up on the cape's detailing so I can't hate on the outfit completely.
Merlin and Igraine are flirting! Hurray! But what's with G being part of the party?
Has Jamie finally figured out that's he's on a silly show? Somehow he's not wooden...yet....
And more gratutious female nudity. Except those "entertainment" costumes seem more accurate than the show's own. (The show has been alluding a bit to Arthur's origins in Roman times as soldier as well as Greco-Roman mythology. So it seems to be placing itself itself on the earlier end of medieval times--when Roman Empire was but a distant memory but not distant enough to be forgotten. Therefore, I can see them having toga style clothes at that time period.)
The Camelot men seem to have forgotten that they are above treating women like property. Oh, but wait, the women are whores, so it doesn't count. Why, show, did you not work out your politics before you went to air? The inconsistancy from episode to episode drives me nuts! You can't be both. I smell a bad episode ahead!
Flames of fire being shot at a castle and Will Scarlett and Izeen getting canonballed to the top of a building. Oops! Got confused for a moment!
The music is quite impressive this episode. I'm just floating over the 'defend Castle Pendragon' discussion and honing in on the soundtrack.
Gawain, why aren't you king yet?
Ugh, the inconsistancy with Gwen also drives me nuts as well. Not 2-3 episodes ago, she was making suggestions on how to get the castle in order. Now, she needs suggestions from Leontes? PLEASE! It doesn't help that the character's more drippy side is being focused on this episode.
Merlin, dear, you're ego is showing and while you have a point, it is lost because you can't own up to your hypocrisy when it comes to having "primal forces."
EWWW! What a cut! I don't think he'll ever be spying on Morgana ever again.
"Men--even the clever ones--think armies decide everything." #reasons why I can't hate on anybody on Morgana's side. #reasons why the nun is more badass than Merlin.
Ugh. "I'll put my faith in Arthur and his champions." Yes, you're nice and the queen of hearts but Morgana is right about you. You don't deserve respect for saying that.
Yeah, I definitely think the soldier will never be spying on a nude Morgana again. Let alone masterbating (the reason for showing us the gratutious bathing scene at the beginning).
"Why are you keen to go out there? It's a suicide mission." (Leontes to a BAMF-ready Gawain) And in one fell swoop, the show revealed it missed the whole point of Arthurian legends. Or at least the part where the knights of the round table go on adventures and take up challenges from people from enchanted realms because saving people far far far far far a long ways away from home so you can come back to the court and tell an amazing "OMG I really survived that and fought that and nearly died saving this damsel here. No, it was the other place where I saved her brother I nearly died...." stories is the WHOLE point. Arthur of legends expects soldiers to think for themselves! Of course, Gawain would know this because he's already figured things out, but the rest of the characters are still blind sheep being blindly led around. Merlin will think of it eventually. But Gawain figured it out first. And Arthur won't have figured it out until Merlin explains it to him one day. But I don't think the writers know their Gawain is smarter than them. So, kudos the actor (who probably has a secret stash of Arthurian lore he consulted during filming which is why he's the only one who comes across as authentic to both the show and the original mythology).
"I know you're the self-appointed Font of All Knowledge, but you didn't see this coming, did you?" Damn it! Merlin's an asshole and Igraine, you're a doormat, but you two are so charming and likable around each other. Just get together already! For reasons I can't begin to logic out, you somehow balance each other out and erase each other's worse (I wrote "weird" originally) traits from each other when you are together.
"Knowledge is pain." Yes, I agree Merlin. However, "ignorance is bliss" is not the better alternative.
"I would never do anything to break your marriage"....except for all those times that you did! Morgana, please shit on Arthur already! Oh, and Gwen, thank you for keeping a backbone here. I was afraid you were going to kiss him like you did the last time Arthur decided he had to not "break your marriage."
Oh, Gawain!!! Why can't you have a show to yourself? You even nailed the humor!
Morgana, I don't think your power is working so well. Igraine is obviously not herself and you are manifesting your version of her like she is drunk.
