Might as well blog about it since I'm sure something will drive me nuts. Merlin is still an asshole, but thank god he still has a conscience. I'm glad he is not forgetting how Excalibur died that easily. And good on the show for having that there. (Now, if only Arthur would have a nightmare about his parents dying instead of all those sex dreams.)
What is with the modern names!?! Stop with the Katelyns and Viviennes and Bridgets!
Damn episode! I have to give you points for 'girls runs out of forest screaming her loved one/relative/someone she knows needs help.' Raading a book of Arthur myths right now and it's a basic plot number. Damn show! You lose your points for the sudden string-villian-up-and-hang-him. The rules ALWAYS is that they have a sword fight for and villian either surrenders or dies. The townspeople don't suddenly pop out from nowhere and hang him. And argument that follows when Arthur intercedes! Not by the book at all. Writers, I actually believed in you (again) for 2 seconds. Why must you smash things so easily?
"You can't dispurse justice when your mind is clouded by revenge" REALLY ARTHUR! MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT LAST EPISODE! I DO NOT FORGET YOUR DIRTY TACTICS SPEECH! AND WHO IT WAS AIMED AT!
Morgana hasn't "thought far enough ahead." Most ridiculous statement (so far, possibly ever) on this ridiculous show. Damn show! You area doing it again. Nun's argument makes sense. Morgana is too isolated a Queen. Bonus point for making nun a feminist. That's very forward thinking considering what's happened on this show recently.
Gwen and the goat were adorable! Glad to see that someone on the writing staff remembered Tamsin can do comedy.
Why is your beef against Merlin, Arthur? Yes, Merlin is an egotistic prick, but he's far more wiser than YOU are Arthur. You're the one LYING and telling half-truths to him. SHOW SOME GRATITUDE!
The writers really remembered Tamsin can do comedy! "I'm going to make everything more organized. Unless you object." She sells the scene! She is too cute! And Arthur is finally remembering he is a king and thankfully hurries away cause he's has more things to do (headcanon: he is also embarrassed that Gwen called him out on not thinking ahead about the people).
I don't buy that Morgana is that socially awkward. Power hungry, yes, but she has always been consistantly portrayed as charismatic. Of course she is talking to commoners so that might be the reason....except she had no problem getting the lady in waiting on her side.
SNOOOOZE. I'm sure they had hearings back in the middle ages, but seriously! what a lazy way to go to show that Arthur is more 'enlightened' than his peers, especially given his OFFSCREEN character development. Plus, I don't watch fantasy shows for Lessons in Democracy Via the Courtroom. Can we please show some IMAGINATION writers?
And the show gets points for acknowledging crazy Merlin. Even though Merlin goes crazy for different reasons in the legends, it's still good to watch it here. Plus, it's a hoot watching JF.
I really want to like this episode, since it recalls the the spirit of 1.01-1.02, but I can't overlook or forget the past 2 episodes. The show can try to whitewash it but I don't forgot how immature and unkingly and not interested in his people Arthur was acting. Or his chattel attitude towards Gwen and his reaction to his mother when she told him to stop it. And the 'feel good' approach doesn't work here since the show decided to go the darker, angstier route.
Lame court justice hearing is lame. Anachronistic. Morgan may be dirty but it's more realistic to the feudalism of those days. And, even Arthur at his noblest wasn't above feudalism. Also, while he was for justice, he wasn't the Fairness Saviour.
Considering how boyish Jamie can look, he seems rather regal, majestic---imposing even--the way he is sitting on that throne surrounded by his men.
I ship Merlin and the Queen! That felt weird to write, but given how this show is screwing with Arthur canon (technically the mythology has never been set in stone: only some myths have become more well-known and repeated than others), I think they might as well acknowledge that relationship and MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Gwennie, you've been on fire this entire episode, but please use your head and think. Of course it happens in other villages. It's happening to you right now! Just sub "king" for "headman" and you have yourself your answer.
The much delayed swordfight finally happens. Quite good actually. But with it is a contrast to Morgana and the show is trying too hard to make her look fake and bad. Which is ridiculous. Morgana knows what happens to women. Morgana knows what Uthur was. She isn't just in it for the power. Even Eva can't make the fakeness sound convincing. The being really obvious and trying too hard and ignoring earlier episode continuity is killing this episode.
Overall, I liked it. Certainly it was decent but the continuity flaws!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh. I don't forgive the shitting on continuity. The character growth and/or degeneration wasn't organic. It was just to move the show along. Which is bad storytelling.
