I'm halfway through episode 2 of Camelot, and though I would dearly love to root for Arthur I can't. Especially when he is showing no common sense, a lack of smarts, and being too much of a pretty boy.

In the Pilot, Kay remarked that Arthur always had everything "too easy." Kay also TOO easily forgiving of Arthur being a future king ("it all makes sense why they favored you.") Arthur having it "too easy" is continuing into this second episode. He doesn't have to do anything but stand around and look pretty and people fall at his feet. And for all prattle Merlin makes about Arthur having to "push himself," Arthur doesn't really DO anything by himself--either his mother, father, brother, or Merlin are the ones coming up with intelligent plans and ideas for Arthur to move forward.

The Elf also revealed a degree of stupidity that will forever stick out in my mind. In the pilot, it was stated that Arthur knows how to get women. Yet, when he saw Guinevere, he walked right up to he and tried to kiss her. Granted, I realize he was out of it mentally (spoiler from pilot I won't post) but STILL. And, then he wondered why she would attack him. Well, duh, you idiot! You don't just walk to a woman and try to make out with her just because you saw her in a dream.

I'm glad to see the Sword in the Stone reference. And how it was done on the show. However, Merlin dearest, it was KAY's initiative and NOT the elf's. That, more than anything else, killed the idea that Arthur was the Once and Future King.

The Elf's lack of smarts also stands out in contrast to his sister's. While Morgan might not always be prepared, she is always preparing. She rightly humiliates Lot for getting lazy and she rightly gets Merlin. While she certainly has an advantage Arthur doesn't---having lived at court--she has against her that she is a woman. I can't take Arthur seriously when, between her, Kay and Merlin, there are lots of people more fit to be King.

Okay, mini-rant about the Elf is done. Going back to watching the episode.

EDIT: Damn show just acknowledged it knew it was doing it through Arthur's speech. I DON'T WANT META! Ugh! And you aren't being smart by acknowledging it....you are just revealing you don't know how to write a hero who isn't a Gary Stu. I'm just going to head canon it that Merlin was bored and decided to give the village idiot the crown because he secretly adores Kay too much.

Still, Arthur's speech gave me warm fuzzies even if he isn't worth two shits as a character.
